Behavioral Intervention (BI) is a specialized service available to children with developmental disabilities who display challenging behaviors. It is a one-to-one individualized service with the objective of developing positive behaviors and skills through positive reinforcement, and through education and natural behavior replacement methods. BI strives to eliminate maladaptive behaviors, and the associated punishments and negative reinforcements which often result.
Who is eligible?
A child from age 4 to 21 years who:
- Has been determined to have a developmental disability.
- Has demonstrated self-injurious, aggressive, or severely maladaptive behavior.
- Has severe deficiency in one or more of the following areas: verbal communication, social interaction, and leisure and play skills.
Where are services available?
Behavioral Intervention services are available in Kootenai County, including areas served by the Coeur d’ Alene, Post Falls, and Rathdrum school districts. Services are provided in the home, in the community, or at Tesh - as appropriate for each participant.
Schedule:
Services are provided during the school year from 2:30-6:00 PM Monday - Friday; a schedule will be individualized to each child's needs. During the summer services are available Monday - Friday, 9:00 AM - 2:30 PM.
Staff requirements:
The BI services are provided by degreed professionals trained in intervention. Each provider has at least 1,000 hours of experience working with children with developmental disabilities.
